Recently, ATPS was invited to a conference that was jointly convened by the Government of Japan, the United Nations, Global Coalition for Africa (GCA), The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank Group. The meeting the TICAD Ministerial Conference on Energy and Environment for Sustainable Development was held in Nairobi, Kenya on 22-23 March, 2007.
The aim of the conference was to promote:
  • a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges around such issues as, energy access, management of water resources and climate variability; and
  • a solution oriented discussion to advance sustainable development goals.
The key perspectives and principles that the conference focused on were:
  • Considering energy access, land and water issues in the context of their impact on growth/development efforts, including poverty reduction, and achievement of MDGs.
  • Large segments of the population, particularly socially vulnerable groups such as women and children suffer from the effects of energy poverty and environmental degradation. How can these effects be minimized/mitigated from the perspective of the human security concept.
  • Promoting "ownership" and "partnership" as key concepts in developing responses to energy and environment challenges.
The objectives of TICAD are to promote high-level policy dialogue between African leaders and their partners; and to mobilize support for African-owned development initiatives.
