The Scientific Revival Day, ATPS Tanzania Chapter
The ATPS Tanzania Chapter in collaboration with the Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) organized a roundtable to discuss the theme: Endogenous Technological Knowledge for Socioeconomic Development"
Twenty-eight people, from academia, government and private sector attended the round table. There was no guest speaker, however, the round table was chaired by the Director of S&T from the Ministry of Higher education, Science and Technology. Prof. Brig.Gen Yadon M. Kohi, the Director General of COSTECH delivered the welcome address and Ms Bitrina Diyamett, the ATPS Tanzania Chapter Coordinator gave the introductory remarks.
The discussion was led by four inventors; three of them were awardees of the Tanzania Award for Scientific and Technological Advancement (TASTA) and the National Award for Scientific Research in Scientific and Technological Advancement (NARST).
The meeting discussed the following inventions:
- Madalla Crate System by Mr. Amos madala
- pH tester by Mr. Emanuel Bukuku
- New Tryponosome Species by Mrs Imna Malele (towards the control of tsetse)
- Biological control of mosquito breeding (towards control of mosquitoes).
The discussion addressed the following policy relevant questions:
- How did the inventor come about the invention and the motivating factor that facilitated the work
- The problems encountered and how they were solved the socioeconomic aspects of the inventions
- The inventor's future plan regarding the invention, especially in regard to turning it into tangible, socially and economically useful product.
The workshop is expected to contribute to the national innovation policy, which is currently under consideration. The theme of the workshop originated from the fact that, inventors are identified awarded and forgotten, and the need to turn, where possible, into innovations.
After the round table discussions, an award' giving ceremony for the best exhibitions, took place. Students from primary and secondary schools were among the participants.
