The ATPS Staff

ATPS has an independent and dynamically evolving Secretariat with staff to provide executive direction, administrative and physical infrastructure to the network. Core staff comprise director, finance and administration, research and training, communications and outreach professionals.

Dr Kevin Urama
Dr Kevin Urama
Kevin Chika Urama, Ph.D (Cambridge) is an Environmental and Ecological Economist developing trans-disciplinary and integrated tools for sustainable management of social, economic and ecological systems. He holds the 2002-3 James Claydon Prize for the most outstanding PhD thesis in Economics or related subjects, St. Edmund's College, University of Cambridge. Before joining ATPS as Director on 01 September 2007 and subsequent confirmation as Executive Director in November 2007, he was leading large international and trans-disciplinary research programs at the Macaulay Institute, Aberdeen UK, where he retains his position as a Senior Research Fellow. Some of these projects are joint projects between the Macaulay, ATPS and other collaborators in Europe and Africa. Dr. Urama will continue to build on these international partnerships between ATPS and other like minded Institutions.
Dr. Urama is also the Inaugural Acting President of the African Society for Ecological Economics (ASEE), the African chapter of the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE). He holds many distinctive prizes and awards for academic excellence and good leadership and has over 50 publications in various media.
He is married to Charity, an environmental scientist, and blessed with three children: Kevin (Jnr), Charity (Jnr) and Emmanuel.

Carol Mbugua
Carol Mbugua
Ms Carol Mbugua is the Executive Assistant to the ATPS Director. She provides administrative, logistical and organizational support to the office of the ATPS Director. Ms Mbugua joined the ATPS Network in 2000 from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) where she worked briefly worked as a receptionist and relief-secretary.
Carol holds a diploma in Secretarial Studies from Cambridge College in Nairobi, Kenya and has over six (6) years experience in administrative and secretarial duties. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce Degree at the Africa Nazarene University and is also undertaking a French Diploma at Alliance Française.

 

Finance and Administration

 
Richard Murimi Muriuki
Richard Murimi Muriuki
Richard Murimi Muriuki serves as the Finance Officer at ATPS. His main duties include maintaining ATPS books of accounts and preparing, compiling and analyzing the network’s financial reports.  Prior to joining ATPS, Richard worked for Swift global (K) Ltd as an Accountant.
Richard holds a Bachelor of Education (Economics and Accounting) and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K). He is currently pursuing an MBA at the University of Nairobi.


Susan Hinga
Susan Hinga
Susan Hinga is the Administrative Secretary at ATPS. She is responsible for human resources matters, general office functions and travel arrangements during conferences and workshop.
Susan holds an Advanced Certificate in Secretarial Studies and a Diploma in French from Alliance Francasie.  
 
Richard Muchesia
Richard Muchesia
Richard Muchesia Inyende is the Driver/Messenger at ATPS. His main duties include delivering and posting letters and general transport logistics.
Richard has also successfully undergone training on anti-carjacking techniques at Glen Edmonds Performance Driving School.

Mary Satsiru
Mary Satsiru
Mary Satsiru is the receptionist at ATPS. She is in charge of all front office functions including telephone switch board operations, managing visitors at the office and maintaining internal correspondence and documentation.
Mary holds an elementary certificate in typing, and has studied various computer packages. She also holds a receptionist certificate from the Nairobi Institute of Business Studies (NIBS).


Research and Training

Dr Catherine Adeya-Weya
Nyaki Adeya
Dr. Catherine Adeya-Weya is the Research and Training Manager at ATPS. She is an Information Scientist with knowledge and skills in information development issues, which include social, political and economic potential and impacts of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) particularly in Africa but in the developing world in general.
Catherine received a BSc in Information Sciences from Kenya and PhD degree in 'Information and Development' from Edinburgh, Scotland. She worked as a Research Fellow for the United Nations University/Institute of New Technologies (UNU/INTECH) in Maastricht (Holland) until 2003 in charge of Africa programmes. She has consulted with international organizations; governments; and universities/research institutions.
Dr Adeya-Weya has coordinated case studies for a World Bank initiative on 'Knowledge, Technology and Growth - Case Studies of Sectoral Clusters in Africa'. She was the leader of the project on how 'Micro Small and Medium Enterprise Clusters in Ghana and Kenya adopt ICTs'. This project was under the thematic area of National Systems of Innovation at UNU/INTECH in Maastricht. The results from this study have been disseminated in various forms including the recently published Industrial Clusters and Innovation Systems in Africa Institutions, Markets and Policy (Oyelaran-Oyeyinka and McCormick, 2007) where she co-authored a chapter on 'Institutional Support for Collective ICT Learning: Cluster development in Kenya and Ghana'.
Catherine was part of the team that finalized the Kenya ICT Policy. She serves on the Editorial Board for 'Journal of Perspectives on Global Development & Technology' (Brill Academic Publishers) and the Kenya Government's 'Digital Broadcasting Task Force'. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Kenya ICT Board and on the Board of Governors of Rangala Girls' School. She is one of the Kenyan members of the Research ICT Africa (RIA) network that is coordinated from South Africa.

Maurice Bolo
Maurice Bolo
Maurice Bolo is the Senior Research Officer at ATPS. His main responsibilities include generating new concepts and translating research ideas into projects, developing proposals and raising funds for programmes and managing the grants process & regional research projects.
Maurice is also the Project Leader of the Agriculture, Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) Project that applies the National Innovation Systems (NIS) framework in analyzing sectoral systems in agriculture, biotechnology and health. He has conducted national case studies on the Floriculture Industry, Pharma-biotechnology Industry and on Innovation Clusters. His current research interests are on Innovation Response Capacities in Agro –export Industries.
Maurice has a background in Natural Sciences (Botany/Chemistry) from the University of Nairobi. He’s secured admission at the Open University (UK) to pursue Doctoral studies in Development Policy and Practice from October 2007. He has written and published chapters in books on Technology and Innovation Clusters, Demand-led Research and Biotechnology.


Evelyn Iminza Oroko
Evelyn Oroko
Ms Evelyn Iminza Oroko is the Program Assistant/ISEE Conference Secretary in the Research and Training Department. Evelyn provides administrative assistance to the Research and Training Department and is also the Local Conference Secretary for the ISEE 2008 biennial conference scheduled in August 2008 in Nairobi. Her post is shared on a 50/50 basis by ASEE and ATPS. In addition to the above main duties, Evelyn assists with management of grants, review of technical and financial reports, coordination of workshop and meetings and translations from French to English and vice versa among others.
Under the ISEE/ASEE, Evelyn provides secretariat assistance to the President of ASEE, coordinates the ISEE/ASEE 2008 annual conference, and liaises with the ISEE Secretariat in Wisconsin, USA among other duties.
Evelyn has a Bachelor of International Relations Degree from the University of Algiers and a Certificate in French Language from the University of Algiers. She has vast experience in research, office organization, public relations and human resource management obtained while working in various reputable firms and institution.


Communications and Outreach


Lily Aduke

Ms Lily Aduke is the Communications and Outreach Manager at ATPS. She is in charge of the network’s general public relations, the publication process including the document peer review process, library management, the ATPS website and developing the institution’s communication and outreach strategy. Lily holds an MA in Communications Studies, a Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication and Bsc in Agriculture.
Lily Aduke has over 15 years experience in communicating science and information management gained from various governmental institutions, such as the Ministry of Agriculture, the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI), and inter-governmental including the African Union – Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) and international scientific research institutions, such as the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE). She has also consulted for various organizations including the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC); the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF); the Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG); Family Health International (FHI); the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA; Bioversity International (IPGRI); the International Institute for Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), UNIFEM, among others.


Lucy Mwangi
Lucy Mwangi
Lucy Mwangi is the Programme and Publications Administrator. She has over eight years experience and exposure in document preparation, production and library management and strong skills in information management, communications and publishing-related work.
Her main duties at ATPS include performing general library services, document design and layout, assisting with web maintenance; writing stories and assisting in coordinating ATPS workshops. Lucy has worked for various organizations including the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), and the Kenya Commercial Bank.
Lucy holds a Bachelor in Library and Information Services (BLIS) from Makerere University and Diploma in Library and Archives Studies from the Kenya Polytechnic.


Ruth Wanjala
Ruth Wanjala
Ms Ruth Wanjala is the Communications Assistant at ATPS. She works with the rest of the department in preparing ATPS advocacy material, report writing, editing ATPS publications, publicity& media liaison and conference coordination. Ruth is also part of the Media for Science Health and Agriculture (MESHA), an association of communicators who are specialized in science, environment, agriculture, health, technology and development reporting.
Ruth holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Daystar University and is currently pursing an M.A in Communications at the same university.
