Prof. Obua hands over the Uganda Chapter to a new National Coordinator

Prof Obua has handed over the leadership of the Uganda chapter to Mr.John Okuonzi. Mr Okuonzi was elected as the new ATPS National Co-ordinator during the Uganda chapter AGM held on 17th September 2009 in Kampala.

Prof. Joseph Obua has been the National Coordinator of ATPS Uganda Chapter from 2003 to September 2009 after taking over from Dr. Zerubabel Nyiira (the first National Coordinator). During his tenure, Prof. Obua maintained an active Chapter that participated in almost all the activities of ATPS Network. On 17th September 2009, ATPS Uganda Chapter held its Annual General Meeting and elected Mr. John Okuonzi as the new National Coordinator. In another development, Prof. Obua joined the Inter-University Council for East Africa – one of the institutions of the East African Community based in Kampala, Uganda, as the Regional Coordinator for the Lake Victoria Research Initiative (VicRes). VicRes is being implemented in the 5 Partner States of the East African Community (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda).

 

Prof. Joseph Obua holds a B.Sc. Forestry (Hons) from Makerere University and both M.Sc. (Environmental Forestry) and PhD from the University of Wales, UK. He has been Head of Department of Forest Biology & Ecosystems Management in the Faculty of Forestry & Nature Conservation at Makerere University since 1999. Up to the time of his appointment, he was a member of the VicRes Scientific Advisory Committee (VicSac). He is a distinguished researcher, research supervisor and administrator. He has supervised over 40 M.Sc. and 10 PhD theses in the last 10 years and published over 50 scientific papers in international journals. He is a peer reviewer of several journals and Chairs a number of Boards of Governmental and Non-Governmental Institutions.

 

The incoming co-ordinator, mr. Okunzi is a lecturer at the Kyambogo University, in the Faculty of Engineering. He  has taught many course units including, Mechanical Technology, Measurement and instrumentation, Control Engineering, Engineering Project Design, Network Design, Engineering Drawing, Workshop Practice and Design to Diploma and Undergraduate students for more than ten years. He is also a long-standing member of the AYFST.
