The 2004 ATPS Annual Conference and Workshop, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
To enhance knowledge exchange and collaboration between the different water stakeholders' in Africa, ATPS organized a two-day conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from November 29-30, 2004. This conference brought together scholars from at least 23 African countries and Europe, and policymakers and water administrators from Africa.
The objectives of the conference were:
- To create a forum for science and technology (S&T) policy scholars to interact and share ideas and knowledge with other policymakers and water administrators
- To provide conceptual and practical underpinnings to understanding water and environmental management with respect to behavioral change, resource-use and conflict, and how new knowledge can improve the situation
- To get a sense of the overall knowledge gap in the sub-sector and how research and training can used to address these gaps
- To share and learn how lessons from other regions of the world can be adapted in Africa
The output of the conference includes:
- An elaborate communiqué and plan of action
- Improved understanding of water related issues among S&T policy scholars and policymakers in Africa
- Stronger partnership between researchers and policymakers/administrators;
- An edited conference proceedings containing all the papers presented at the conference with practical recommendations
- An enriched ATPS Program on Water and Environment
Eighteen proposals were presented for peer review all focusing on science, technology, water and environment.
After rigorous selection, nine grants were awarded by the ATPS Board. Achievement Awards were presented for the second time in Addis Ababa. Just like the previous year in Lesotho, four awards were presented in Addis Ababa as follows: Best Overall Chapter - ATPS Ethiopia; Outstanding Effort by a Chapter" Cote d'Ivoire; Most Innovative Advocacy Activity - Nigeria; and Best Exhibition - Cote d'Ivoire
