Research on "Stratégie de gestion durable des zones humides aux niveaux local et communal dans le département du Zou, Bénin pour le mieux être des riverains et la conservation de la biodiversité" by Dr. Roch Mongbo
The Zou Province in Benin contains an area of wetlands classified as being of "International Importance" under the Convention on Wetlands. This humid zone represents a unique ecosystem, but the animals and vegetation are threatened by the growing riverside populations, coastal urbanization, the absence of inter-community dialogue and the non-existence of a national strategy to manage this important area. Moreover, despite this area being rich in water resources, access to potable water remains precarious.
On the whole, current reports have shown unfavourable levels of water resource and environmental sustainability which, if they remain unabated, will certainly lead to increased poverty in the future. Sufficient knowledge of current practices and water resource management is required to improve the way of life of the affected communities.
By analysing the efficiency and sustainability of current water plans in the region, this research aims to improve the livelihood of people living along rivers, and also conserve the biodiversity in the ecosystems of concerned wetlands.
The complementary pilot activities will explore alternative usage of resources, create interest and promote behaviour changes among the people who use these resources and enhance sustainable management of the same.
The expected effects are long-term, sustainable improvement in the way water is managed by the wetland's communities, while improving their living conditions and preserving the delicate the environment.
