Introduction: ATPS has commissioned the following research studies on Water and Environment in nine African countries. It is expected that each research study and complimentary activities demonstrate social relevance both in conception and execution. Each research project emphasises social innovation, indicating how the work improves the welfare of the people concerned, and how they are likely to be better equipped to deal with these problems after the intervention. Each research team is required to engage intended users throughout the process (through knowledge exchange exercises, practical demonstrations etc) and encourage actionable implementation plans using the results of the activity. This may be targeted towards a policy change, institutional adjustment or behavioural changes at the grassroots level. Each project is required to have at least two dissemination exercises with stakeholders and the proceedings of these exercises reflected in the report submissions. The researchers are expected to report satisfactorily to the Secretariat on all these aspects throughout the duration of this activity. National coordinators in each country are expected to ensure quality control and to manage the submission of reports for projects in their various countries. Each research team is expected to present an interim and a final report at two international conferences that has been scheduled by ATPS as part of the Water and Environment programme. This provides an opportunity for extended peer review of the mid-term and final outputs of the studies. Relevant resource persons will be invited to attend these conferences to provide the required quality control for each country team. The research outputs from the awarded grants will be subjected to extensive external review by a team of international experts in the field. The subject of the research for the awarded grants covers a number of issues relevant to the broad and specific objectives of the Water and Environment programme.
