ATPS Small Grants on Water and Environment
During the 2004 ATPS Annual Conference and Workshop, in Addis Ababa, the ATPS Board commissioned research studies on water and environment in nine countries. These countries included Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, Lesotho, Malawi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and Cote d'Ivoire.
Each research project was expected to emphasize social innovation, indicating how the work would improve people's welfare and how they were likely to be better equipped to deal with the issues after the intervention.
Each research team was required to engage intended users throughout the process through knowledge exchange exercises and practical demonstrations and encourage actionable implementations plans using the results of the activity.
Each research project held at least two dissemination workshops with stakeholders. National coordinators in each country ensured quality control and managed the submission of reports for projects in their various countries. Each team also presented an interim report during the 2005 ATPS Annual Conference in Mombasa, Kenya.
Eight of the nine small grants issued in 2004 after the Addis Ababa workshop are now complete and the final reports of these papers were presented at the 2006 ATPS Annual Conference and Workshop in Maputo, Mozambique.
Three abstracts from the small grants process were accepted for presentation at the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE) Conference which was held in New Delhi from 15 December 2006.
In addition, the grantees won sponsorship to this conference through the African Society for Ecological Economics (ASEE). Brief summaries of the awarded research grants are presented below:
