Youth Consultative Meeting, Nairobi, April 2005


The African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS) in conjunction with the Technical Center for Agricultural and Rural cooperation (CTA) organized a two-day consultative meeting for the youth in sub-Saharan to brainstorm and plan for an upcoming youth science congress on "Youth Employment/Wealth Creation: Opportunities in Agriculture, Science and Technology."
The meeting that was held on 28-29 April 2005 at Hilton hotel in Nairobi, Kenya brought together 14 youth leaders and representatives from 6 sub-Saharan countries including Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Kenya.
The consultative meeting was intended to form a steering committee to plan for the congress and give the meeting a wider base and ownership by the African youth. Specific objectives of the consultative meeting included:
  • To deliberate on the themes of the congress
  • To agree on the criteria for selection and qualification for participants, presenters and keynote speakers
  • To deliberate on the essay competition, awards, panel of judges and judging criteria
  • To select and agree on the venue for the field visits
  • To set dates and timelines for different activities leading to the main congress and allocate responsibilities amongst the committee members
At the end of the meeting, the following outcomes were realized:
  • The participants deliberated and agreed on the important themes to be addressed by the congress
  • The participants agreed on the criteria and choice of invitees to the congress, the presenters and topics to be addressed and keynote speakers and the relevant topics
  • The criteria for selecting the panel of judges was agreed upon, the judging criteria as well as the awards were agreed upon
  • Participants agreed to form a steering committee for the congress and allocated responsibilities amongst the committee members.
